The East African nation Welcomes Valuable Treasures Following a Long Residence in German Hands
A total of 12 ancient artefacts have been officially returned to Ethiopia following staying by a German family for over a century.
These artefacts, originally acquired in the 1920's by the German diplomat to Ethiopia a German envoy and his spouse his partner, were transferred on this past Wednesday to the research center at Addis Ababa University.
The collection included headpieces, protective shields and artistic works, each considered as culturally valuable in the country.
"These artefacts still serve as a symbol of the enduring and friendly connection between the German nation and the Ethiopian people," remarked Ferdinand von Weyhe, the envoy to the East African country.
Professor a professor, whose father was delivered during the household's service in the nation, presented the objects at a ceremony attended by Tourism Minister Selamawit Kassa.
He explained that the household's aim to restore the items was to "share their beauty with the audience and preserve the culture and past tied to my father's origin."
These artefacts were either considered donations or buys, as stated by the household.
"I want to express gratitude to the Weiss relatives for practically expressing their sincere affection for the nation by meticulously safeguarding these treasures and importantly securing their repatriation to their rightful nation," said the official.
The minister noted that the pieces would in the near future be available to the public for investigation and scholarly work, calling the decision a landmark in safeguarding the nation's cultural heritage.
"Actions will continue to return old items that are located in the custody of private persons and entities throughout the planet," she stated.
In the era of colonialism in Africa, many of historical items were taken.
The request by nations in Africa for the repatriation of stolen objects has been met with some positive outcomes in recent years - though a number of items are just on loan.
Back in 2022, Germany was the initial country to give back some of the renowned historical items to Nigeria in an attempt to deal with its "complex colonial history."
