Government Turns to Supreme Court After Unsuccessful Bid to Block Snap Aid Directive
This past Friday, immediately following a federal appeals court decided that the White House must fully fund Snap food aid benefits, the federal government appealed to the nation's highest court in a new attempt to prevent the directive.
Within hours, the highest court handed down an emergency order temporarily blocking complete Snap food aid funds, which nearly 42 hundred thousand Americans depend on to buy groceries.
“Legal counsel continue battling, around the clock, to protect and further the administration's priorities,” the attorney general stated on social media shortly after 9:30pm ET.
White House staff had petitioned the US appeals court to overturn a judicial decision requiring them to issue this month's entire Snap payments in the middle of a government funding lapse, and had their request rejected later the same day.
The High Court Issues Emergency Order Blocking Full Food Stamp Benefits
The top court's decision was issued after the White House asked a federal appeals court on Friday to halt a court ruling requiring them to distribute November’s entire Snap assistance throughout a US federal government shutdown.
After that request to halt was denied, the White House sought help from the supreme court in a new effort to prevent the order to completely finance Snap food aid disbursements.
