At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio de Janeiro's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a security raid against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's records.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities stated. More than 80 suspects were taken into custody.
Intense confrontations broke out when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "shocked" by the police operation, urging "immediate and thorough inquiries".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements adjacent to the city's international airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
State officials said a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
Many residents were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
Local Reaction
Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.
Gang Growth
The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were seized in the operation, in addition to multiple guns.
Raid Preparation
The combined action by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Numerous alleged criminals are considered members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are presently concealed in the metropolitan area.
